Using Microsoft Encarta

  1. Insert the Encarta CD-ROM in the CD drive and launch Encarta.
  2. A screen will appear with about six options on it. The first is entitled Overview of Encarta Encyclopaedia. Click this, and it will give you full directions in the many ways to use Encarta.
  3. Click onto the 'Encyclopaedia Articles' link.
  4. A new screen appears, with the Pinpointer window active. In the space below 'Type in an Article title', type in the word or words which you wish to research, for example 'Quantum Theory'.
  5. If the search term is recognised by Encarta, it will appear in the list below. In this example, click on the term Quantum Theory in this list - it should be highlighted automatically.
  6. The Pinpointer screen will disappear, and you are returned to the main window - which should now have the article on Quantum Theory visible.
  7. Click on the scroll arrow on the bottom right to move down the page. If available, images and pictures will appear to the left-hand side of the article window.
  8. Once you have finished reading the article, you might wish to look for another article. To access the Pinpointer, click on the word Find located on the toolbar at the top of the screen. The Pinpointer appears again. Follow the above steps to enter your new search term.

Alternatively, if you wish to return to the very beginning, click on the word Home which is located on the toolbar at the top of the screen.

Navigating Microsoft Encarta
In a similar way to the Internet, articles in multimedia encyclopaedias are usually linked to related terms, for example inventors, definitions of terms, video clips and audio clips. In Encarta, these links are usually displayed in brown letters.

  1. Place your mouse cursor over the desired link. The cursor will then change to a pointing finger.
  2. Click once. The visible page then changes to the relevant page.

Using the Quantum Theory example mentioned above, placing the mouse over the brown Bell's Inequality takes you directly to that page.

Once you have read the information, you can easily return to the previous page or main article by clicking on the Back pointer as illustrated below:

There is also a Forward pointer - greyed out in the above illustration as there is no page to move forward to. It will become highlighted after you have clicked the Back button so that you may move back and forth between pages you have accessed.
