Presentation Packages and Facilities

There are many presentation packages available for the PC and most of them combine design facilities with data chart facilities and slide shows. Examples include WordPerfect Presentations, Lotus Freelance, CorelDraw and Microsoft PowerPoint.

The computer industry makes substantial use of presentation software as images can be manipulated to simulate motion - an excellent example being the PowerPoint demonstration available in the Help menu.

What makes PowerPoint suitable for its purpose?
The range of capabilities include:

  • All visuals can be stored in a single file.
  • A range of clipart and templates for slides.
  • The ability to create a master slide for elements required on every slide in a show.
  • Importation of text, spreadsheets and graphics from other application packages.
  • 3D effects with pie, bar, column and scatter charts.
  • Animation effects between slides.
  • Hierarchical charts.
  • Speaker notes with copy of the visual plus additional notes.
  • Handouts for the audience.
  • Presentation options - standalone, automatic, carousel or manual.
  • Slide sorter and miniature display/print (thumbnail) option.
  • Sound effects.

In each presentation package the computer screen displays a work area called a frame or slide, similar to a blank piece of paper. Designs can be scrolled up and down on the screen or working area. Items can be redrawn and corrected on the screen before you obtain printouts. Presentation software should offer WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) with actual typefaces, fonts, text styles, positions, colours, etc, on screen. Individual slides can be combined into a show.
