Meeting the needs of the National Curriculum

History
The Wind Street module is aimed at children at Key Stages 2 and 3. It is designed to promote the use of Information Communications Technology (ICT) through the teaching of History. Although aimed primarily at the History Study Unit 5 - Life in Wales and Britain in Victorian Times - it could equally be the focus of a Local History Theme for Study Unit 15a.

Information Communications Technology
This module addresses the Communicating and Handling Information strand of ICT, but there are opportunities to contribute to the evaluation of applications.

On Worksheet 1, filling in the census return with information from the Census Enumerator's Story goes part way to meeting Level 3 (be able to collect information...), and if a prepared database is given to pupils, they could actually enter the data into the computer so that they have: ...enter(ed) it into a database (whose structure may have been prepared in advance...). There are many opportunities in later tasks to: ...select and retrieve information from the database, and: ...to use ICT for investigations requiring the analysis if data.

On Worksheet 4, finding and printing out the details for the Mackworth Hotel means that pupils are able: to find and present stored information required at Level 4.

Questions on Worksheet 1 highlight the shortcomings of data collection for the Census of 1881 which will help pupils to: understand the need to question the accuracy of displayed information and that results produced by a computer may be affected by incorrect data, (Level 4). There are two rogue entries in the database where two people are stated to be aged 999 years, which will help to emphasise this point.

The whole module affords an opportunity for teachers to point out that: ...personal information may be held on a computer, which is of interest to themselves and their families, (Level 5).
