The Development of Oystermouth Castle

12th Century
The first castle probably had a stone keep, a rubble stone rampart and a stone or timber gate tower.
Early 13th Century
The keep was repaired and enlarged. The rampart would have been replaced by a stone wall with a new stone gate tower.
13th Century
Two large buildings were added west of the keep. The castle may have looked like this when Edward I stayed there in 1284. In 1287 it was badly damaged in a revolt.
Late 13th Century
New curtain walls were built around the courtyard and a large gatehouse.

Early 14th Century
A large tower with a chapel on the upper floor was added. The gatehouse towers were planned, but may not have been built.
