Alan began teaching in 1969 and spent 11 years as head of department in Driffield School, East Yorkshire between 1975 and 1986. This was followed by a three-year stint as Development Officer for the Cambridge A-Level History Project during its pilot phase. Between 1986 and 1994, Alan completed two research studies into the development of children's conceptual awareness in history; one focusing on 11/12 year-olds (M.A.), and the other on 17/18 year-olds (M.Phil.). |

now works as an independent education consultant and OHMCI inspector.
