Year of Reading

The aim of the National Year of Reading is to take a giant step forward in transforming attitudes to reading. The Year is a key strand in the Government's National Literacy Strategy and its policies to promote lifelong learning. It is hoped that the whole community will be involved in the national effort to raise standards of literacy and create a more literate nation.

The year starts in September 1998. It is for everyone - children, teenagers and adults, avid readers, those who rarely read at all, and those for whom learning difficulties are a barrier to reading enjoyment.

Working in partnership with communities and businesses, families and individuals, the National Year of Reading will promote reading through events and initiatives designed to encourage everyone to read for pleasure and for information, more widely and more often.

Although the National Year of Reading will soon be drawing to a close, we'd like to hear about any events or activities that your school or class held to promote the Year. Please e-mail the Virtual Literacy Centre and we will highlight your work on these pages.
