Second Movement: Adagio Molto - D Minor
|
The music begins quietly in D minor (the relative minor of F major),
with muted instruments playing sustained notes. The music portrays the
'Sleeping Drunkards', resting after their
celebrations in the first movement. Throughout this movement the soloist
plays the same music as the 1st violins. |
|
The theme is based on a descending motif, with much use made of
'diminished' chords. The music has a 'wandering' quality, as if in a dream.
For the final 15 bars, the music moves over a dominant pedal, ending with
an imperfect cadence which prepares the listener for the last movement. |
