Fantasy and Science Fiction

Fantasy and Science fiction is basically work which has its main interest in stories that take place in other worlds, other times, or other dimensions.   It is the setting that is of most importance in Fantasy and Science fiction.

The setting for fantasy and science fiction can be anywhere in any time, for, by its very nature there are no boundaries - anything is possible.  This can cause realism problems though, so ensure that:

the world that you create is coherent

all the elements should fit together into a pleasing whole

that the reader understands your world - their only knowledge of this world comes from what you tell them

and make sure that what you do tell them is consistent

In Fantasy and Science Fiction, you are no longer confined to human characters.   Suddenly, all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures are possible, but before you get carried away, consider:

how the character will relate to the setting - will they:

belong in your imaginary world

be strangers in a strange land

have a familiar name, or one that belongs only to their world

how will they look, dress, speak, move ?

how will you make an unbelievable character, believable ?

Within fantasy and Science Fiction, your the theme can be anything you want - it could be love (in a science fiction romance!) but more normally, the themes are usually to do with:

technology

the supernatural

magic

space

Your plot is going to relate to your theme - if your theme is love, you will need a plot that follows relationships, but if your theme is the supernatural, you can have a plot as wild as your imagination.  Watch out, though, you only have a limited length for your story - don't get too ambitious.  The following extraordinary events could be included in your plot, however:

dragons

magical happenings

alien invasions

time travel
